“I want you in my life for as long as we live.” – Allison La Croix
No matter how many cupcakes I give this book, or how much I intend to praise it, I don’t think I’m gonna do justice to the awesomeness that I was introduced to. Like, hell, how can you go on – even to the next book – after opening this particular treasure chest?!?! Peter Blackstone is an Indebted – a warrior that should have died long ago, but made a deal with the devil to ensure they kept going. Now he has to keep feeding the latter with dark souls as part of the deal, an immortal living an eternal hell on earth. There’s only one way for him to finally find peace and go back to being mortal – find his Meaningful Kill. But with no clues as to what or who that is, he’s essentially helpless. Until he finds dr. Allison La Croix. Allison has a terrifying gift, one that has only been a burden in her life. And it looks like Peter’s presence can help her control it – never mind the fact the man makes her want him and fear him at the same time. However, there’s one person who’s gunning to stop Peter and keep those two apart . With his own “boss” out to get him, protecting the woman who makes him feel alive and keeping his humanity just got a whole lot harder… Where to begin? The unique as heck plot? The wonderful storytelling talent? The amazingly complex characters? The witty and funny dialogues? The climax of the book that had me screaming and crying and keeping my fingers crossed so that things would work out – even when I knew they would have to, seeing as it’s a book and it’s supposed to have a HEA? Or the steamy and hot love scenes? An emotional roller-coaster, full of suspense, that had me waiting at the edge of my seat with bated breath. That’s what this book was. Not only was I shocked at every turn, but it was also shiver-worthy and I’d do it all over again, without even blinking! Yes, this was definitely a book a reader can enjoy mutliple times, hands down! Peter was a sweetheart despite being a brute at times, and his rough exterior really did nothing to hide what a marshmallow he was inside. He was all manly and Alpha without being overbearing, and when he turned up the heat… Oh, sweet cheese on crackers, summer heat combined with Peter in steamy scenes seriously had me sweating buckets and in terrible of cold showers! Not shower, SHOWERS! As for Allison, she was a very realistic heroine. She wasn’t perfect, she made tons of mistakes, and there were times I nearly lost my shit at her antics. I mean, yeah, I get where she’s coming from, the whole thing with Peter was scary and it’s normal to freak out. But WHY can’t you decide that BEFORE making the dude hope, woman?! My heart just about broke when she kept pushing him away, and the poor fellow just kept being by her side like an oversized, macho puppy. Like I said, though, this was perfectly realistic. I may not like it, but I think it beats accepting the truth without batting an eyelash by a mile, so kudos to that. Plus, her kindness and her spunk overshadowed that natural freak out she had going on, and I’m not one to ignore that. All in all, I loved the book. It sucked me right in from the very first page, something not all books are capable of nowadays. I usually need at least two chapters for that – some stories even take as far as 50 pages to get me to warm up to them. So to have this one intrigue me and get me hooked from the first page really speaks volumes, IMHO. I’m off to start with Dante’s story – and heads up, I think the guy’s gonna be my bias of this series, if his lines in the first book were any indication! “I love you, Allie. I would die for you.” – Peter Blackstone ***I was given an ARC from the author via Reading Alley in exchange for an honest review.
